A Gift of Chinese Culture: Qinghua Tea Cup with Poem
It's not just a cup, but a piece of Chinese art and philosophy.
This cup is made in Jingdezhen, China's centuries-old "Porcelain Capital," famous for its exquisite ceramics. The beautiful blue patterns you see are painted in the classic "Blue and White" (Qinghua) style.
The poem featured on the cup is one of the most beloved works in Chinese literature, called "Calming Wind and Waves" (Ding Feng Bo). It was written by Su Shi, a legendary poet, artist, and statesman from the Song Dynasty (almost 1000 years ago!).
The original chinese content goes like:
莫听穿林打叶声,何妨吟啸且徐行。
竹杖芒鞋轻胜马,谁怕?一蓑烟雨任平生。
料峭春风吹酒醒,微冷,山头斜照却相迎。
回首向来萧瑟处,归去,也无风雨也无晴。
The Story Behind the Poem:
March 7, 1079. On my way to the Sandy Lake, it rained. My friends and I were equipped with raincoats, but the others were all in a sorry plight, I alone was unaware of it. Now it clears up. So I write this poem.
Listen not to the rain beating against the trees.
Why don't you slowly walk and chant at ease?
Better than a saddle I like sandals and cane.
I'd fain,
In a straw cloak, spend my life in mist and rain.
Drunk, I am sobered by the vernal wind shrill
And rather chill.
In front, I see the slanting sun atop the hill;
Turning my head, I find the dreary beaten track.
Let me go back!
Impervious to wind, rain or shine, I'll have my will.
Why It's Meaningful?
The poem is a powerful metaphor for facing life's unexpected "storms" with a calm and fearless heart. The last famous line, "Returning, I find nor wind nor rain nor sunny weather," teaches us the ultimate wisdom: true peace comes from within, beyond the ups and downs of life.
So, whenever you use this cup for your coffee or tea, I hope it reminds you of this spirit—to face every day with grace, resilience, and a light heart.
Hope you like it!
Fired at an intense 1300°C, this cup achieves a dense, non-porous ceramic structure, fundamentally preventing tea or coffee stains from penetrating the inner surface. Maintenance is remarkably simple: just periodically scrub with a toothbrush and a small amount of toothpaste to restore it to a like-new condition.
